Lead Roofs

Service Details

Lead has been used in roofing for centuries, and it remains the material of choice for many applications where durability, workability, and aesthetic quality matter. At Capital Roofing, our leadwork specialists carry out everything from small flashing repairs to complete lead roof installations on some of London's most important buildings.

The unique property of lead is its malleability. It can be dressed over complex shapes, into tight corners, and around intricate details in a way that no other roofing material can match. This makes it indispensable for valley linings, chimney flashings, dormer cheeks, bay window roofs, parapet gutters, and decorative features. On heritage buildings, lead is often the only appropriate material for these critical waterproofing details.

We work with milled lead sheet in accordance with Lead Sheet Association (LSA) guidelines and BS 6915. The correct specification of lead thickness (known as code weight), the sizing of individual pieces, and the detailing of joints and fixings are all critical to achieving a long-lasting installation. Lead expands and contracts significantly with temperature changes, and if these movements are not properly accommodated, the lead will fatigue and crack. Our leadworkers understand these principles thoroughly and apply them on every project.

Sand-cast lead is specified for certain heritage applications where a traditional appearance is required. Sand-cast lead has a textured surface that differs from machine-milled sheet and is considered more authentic for restoration work on historic buildings. We source sand-cast lead from specialist suppliers and have experience installing it on listed buildings and churches.

For new-build projects, we offer hard metal alternatives to traditional lead, including zinc, stainless steel, and coated aluminium. These materials can replicate the appearance of lead at lower cost and with less weight, and they may be preferred where theft risk is a concern. However, for sheer longevity and workability, lead remains unmatched.

Our leadwork is guaranteed and is carried out by experienced tradespeople, several of whom have been with the company for 15 years or more. We hold all necessary certifications and are fully insured for lead roofing work at any height and on any building type.

If your property needs leadwork, from a simple re-flashing job to a complete lead roof installation, please contact our Blackheath office for a site visit and quotation.
